If you recall the National Examination Coucil (NECO) has released June/July 2019 Neco result, withholding the result of students in the states that are owing the council.

The examination management body withhold student's results from all government owned Secondary Schools across Niger state.

Many affected students in Niger state lamented over the development and stated fear of possible admission deprivation in Nigeria's Higher Institution of learning if nothing is done by the authorities concern.

Abdullahi Zakari Aliyu mantafien, expressed his sadness and urge governor Sani Bello to rectify the issue.

"Very recently Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) instructed all candidates to upload their O level results in the Board's portal if they want to be consider in this year admission exercise.

"If truly Niger state government is committed to the welfare of the people and quality education, governor Sani Bello must rise to save us from loosing admission at different tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

"Many universities, polytechnics and colleges of education has started fixing date for POST-UTME screening, and O level result is among the compulsory requirement in the screening exercise. some have started given admission already.

"Therefore, on behalf of all Niger state students graduated in 2019, I am calling on Niger state governor Abubakar sani Bello lolo, to as a matter of urgency authorise the immediate payment of NECO registration fees in order to allow us access to our results," Abdullahi added.

Meanwhile, Fatima mohammad another female student from Government day secondry School Gbadafu lamented the delay in the payment of NECO registration fees by the state government.

"Governor Abubakar is among the advocates of girl-child education, we hope he will not allow the disruption of our academic future. We therefore calling on him to do anything possible to ensure Niger female students are not deny admission in the nation's tertiary institutions as a result of non-payment of NECO registration fees.

"Please let the government stop playing with the future of Niger state youths seeking to get admission in various Tertiary institutions.

"Both His Excellency Abubakar Sani Bello, His Deputy Alhaji Ahmed ketso, and many of his cabinet members all passed through public schools and I am sure the government of their time didn't play and risk their future like this, they are all providences benefactors of Government educational institutions," Fatima added.

Most of the senior officials of Niger State Ministry of Education didn't respond to the issue, almost a month now i dont think they did anything regards to this issue of non-payment of NECO registration fees.

One senior education official who disclosed anonymity said, "there are plans on ground to settle NECO registration fees and very soon all students will access their results."

The Public Relations Officer of NECO, Mr. Azeez Sani, also confirmed the release of the results, noting that he marking of the answer scripts of the candidates took two weeks across the country and ended on Saturday, August 10.

According to Gana, 984,152 candidates representing 85.50 percent made Credit and above in English while 954,399 candidates made Credit and above in Mathematics. The registrar further disclosed that a total of 1,041,986 representing 89.90 percent made five credits and above irrespective of English and Mathematics, adding that the number increased by 0.5 percent.

The registrar said the June/July NECO exams is a success, noting that when compared to the 2018 exercise, there is an increase of 0.11 percent in candidates who scored five credits and above. <script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>

He however noted that the number of candidates involved in various forms of malpractice in 2019 increased with 40,630 cases recorded as against 20,181 cases recorded in 2018.

Top officials of the UN, including Secretary-General António Guterres, sounded the warning at an event to commemorate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in New York.

In his message, Guterres stated that almost half of the world’s estimated 6,700 languages, which were mostly indigenous, risked extinction.

According to him, the world loses a wealth of traditional knowledge with every language that disappears.

He, therefore, called for urgent action to preserve, revitalise and promote indigenous languages.

“Languages are how we communicate, and they are inextricably linked to our cultures, histories, and identity,” he said.

The UN chief noted that a significant proportion of the estimated 370 million indigenous people in the world lacked basic rights.

He said that systematic discrimination and exclusion continued to threaten ways of life, cultures, and identities.

“Failure to provide multilingual and inter-cultural education puts indigenous peoples at a disadvantage, threatening their very survival.

“More must be done to enable indigenous languages to flourish so we may retain the wealth of knowledge and cultures that are part of the world’s rich diversity.

“On this International Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to work together to realize the rights of indigenous peoples,” he said.

In a video message, President of the General Assembly, Ms. María Espinosa, described indigenous people as “the bearers of millenary knowledge systems where ancient and distinct languages are central.”

Espinosa, who sent her message from Bolivia where she was on an official visit, said that indigenous languages provided unique ways to see and understand the world beyond being a means of communication.

“They are symbols of identity and belonging; they are vehicles of values to transmit culture and connecting the indigenous peoples with nature.

“These languages are all vulnerable, many seriously endangered or on the brink of extinction.

“Others, unfortunately, have already been lost forever, taking the wisdom of their peoples with them,” she lamented.<script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>

She described indigenous languages as a priceless heritage and a vehicle of ancestral knowledge on culture, medicine, and astronomy, which was vital to reach the goals of the 2030 Agenda.

Espinosa, therefore, emphasised the need for member states to defend the rights of indigenous peoples and respect their way of life as it was closely linked to the survival of their languages.

The developmental progress of Africa’s Grand Inga Dam has been slow, but a new president and renewed confidence from China may reignite the situation.
One of the most ambitious projects in Africa’s history has encountered a series of delays and false starts over the years. But as the winds of change blow, renewed optimism is also in the air. The financial backers are also supported by a consortium from Spain, although their involvement has not been guaranteed going forward. Of course, there are problems with the proposals. Despite plans to make the Inga Dam twice the size of Three Gorges, critics are upset that most of the power will be outsourced from the Congolese facility. It’s estimated that 70% of its total power output will go towards foreign countries – with South Africa right at the front of the queue.
Grand Inga Dam: The South African connection
Officials from Mzansi may look to purchase up to 5 000 megawatts of power from Inga when it has finally completed its next development stage . That’s roughly the amount of power that is taken off the grid during Stages 4 -5 of load shedding. However, we’d be benefitting from a project that must be used to serve local interests first. Recent estimates suggest that just under 20% of Congolese citizens have access to electricity . If a hydroelectric superpower is established on their doorstep, action must be taken to bring that percentage up to a more respectable figure.

China in Africa and Mzansi
In terms of South African investment , China certainly has a few fingers in pies. Their money is already tied up in bridges connecting KZN to Mozambique, a major coal export deal and plans to improve energy production in our country. Should they press-on with more work at the Inga Dam, it would strengthen the commitments between the two nations, but also has the potential to deepen the debt.
