If you recall the National Examination Coucil (NECO) has released June/July 2019 Neco result, withholding the result of students in the states that are owing the council.<br><br>

The examination management body withhold student's results from all government owned Secondary Schools across Niger state.<br><br>

Many affected students in Niger state lamented over the development and stated fear of possible admission deprivation in Nigeria's Higher Institution of learning if nothing is done by the authorities concern.<br><br>

Abdullahi Zakari Aliyu mantafien, expressed his sadness and urge governor Sani Bello  to rectify the issue.<br><br>

"Very recently Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) instructed all candidates to upload their O level results in the Board's portal if they want to be consider in this year admission exercise.<br><br>

"If truly Niger state government is committed to the welfare of the people and quality education, governor Sani Bello must rise to save us from loosing admission at different tertiary institutions in Nigeria.<br><br>

"Many universities, polytechnics and colleges of education has started fixing date for POST-UTME screening, and O level result is among the compulsory requirement in the screening exercise. some have started given admission already.<br><br>

"Therefore, on behalf of all Niger state students graduated in 2019, I am calling on Niger state governor Abubakar sani Bello lolo, to as a matter of urgency authorise the immediate payment of NECO registration fees in order to allow us access to our results," Abdullahi added.<br><br>

Meanwhile, Fatima mohammad another female student from Government day secondry School Gbadafu lamented the delay in the payment of NECO registration fees by the state government.<br><br>

"Governor Abubakar is among the advocates of girl-child education, we hope he will not allow the disruption of our academic future. We therefore calling on him to do anything possible to ensure Niger female students are not deny admission in the nation's tertiary institutions as a result of non-payment of NECO registration fees.<br><br>

"Please let the government stop playing with the future of Niger state youths seeking to get admission in various Tertiary institutions.<br><br>

"Both His Excellency Abubakar Sani Bello, His Deputy Alhaji Ahmed ketso, and many of his cabinet members all passed through public schools and I am sure the government of their time didn't play and risk their future like this, they are all providences benefactors of Government educational institutions," Fatima added.<br><br>

Most of the senior officials of Niger  State Ministry of Education didn't respond to the issue, almost a month now i dont think they did anything regards to this issue of non-payment of NECO registration fees.<br><br>

One senior education official who disclosed anonymity said, "there are plans on ground to settle NECO registration fees and very soon all students will access their results."<br><br>

UN Seeks Urgent Action To Save Indigenous Languages.

Top officials of the UN, including Secretary-General António Guterres, sounded the warning at an event to commemorate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in New York.<p>

In his message, Guterres stated that almost half of the world’s estimated 6,700 languages, which were mostly indigenous, risked extinction.<p>

According to him, the world loses a wealth of traditional knowledge with every language that disappears.<p>

He, therefore, called for urgent action to preserve, revitalise and promote indigenous languages.<p>

<p>“Languages are how we communicate, and they are inextricably linked to our cultures, histories, and identity,” he said.<p>

The UN chief noted that a significant proportion of the estimated 370 million indigenous people in the world lacked basic rights.<p>

He said that systematic discrimination and exclusion continued to threaten ways of life, cultures, and identities.<p>

In her message, the Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed said education for indigenous people was pivotal to enable them to enjoy and preserve their culture and identity.

<p>Mohammed said, “Intercultural and multi-lingual education is necessary to prevent irreparable loss.<p>

“Failure to provide multilingual and inter-cultural education puts indigenous peoples at a disadvantage, threatening their very survival.

<p>“More must be done to enable indigenous languages to flourish so we may retain the wealth of knowledge and cultures that are part of the world’s rich diversity.<p>

“On this International Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to work together to realize the rights of indigenous peoples,” he said.<p>

In a video message, President of the General Assembly, Ms. María Espinosa, described indigenous people as “the bearers of millenary knowledge systems where ancient and distinct languages are central.”<p>

Espinosa, who sent her message from Bolivia where she was on an official visit, said that indigenous languages provided unique ways to see and understand the world beyond being a means of communication.<p>

“They are symbols of identity and belonging; they are vehicles of values to transmit culture and connecting the indigenous peoples with nature.<p>

“These languages are all vulnerable, many seriously endangered or on the brink of extinction.<p>

“Others, unfortunately, have already been lost forever, taking the wisdom of their peoples with them,” she lamented.<p><script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>

She described indigenous languages as a priceless heritage and a vehicle of ancestral knowledge on culture, medicine, and astronomy, which was vital to reach the goals of the 2030 Agenda.<p>

Espinosa, therefore, emphasised the need for member states to defend the rights of indigenous peoples and respect their way of life as it was closely linked to the survival of their languages.<p>

EARLY LIFE<br />
<br />
The Hon. Umar Mohammad Bago was born in 1974 and had his elementary education at Marafa Primary School, Minna where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC). He then proceeded to Federal Government College Jos where he also obtained the West Africa School Certificate <a href="https://www.waecdirect.org/">(WAEC)</a>. He then gained admission into the prestigious a href=http://www.udusok.edu.ng">Usman  Danfodio University, Sokoto, from where he bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science.<br />

CAREER<br />
<br />
Hon.Muhammad Umar Bago had a very disciplined and focused childhood which in no small measure assisted his career in the banking industry.<br />
Hon. Umar Mohammad Bago worked with the United Bank for Africa (UBA), First City Monument Bank (FCMB) and Afri-Bank PLC respectively, where through hard work, high sense of responsibility and dedication to duty, he rose to managerial level in the ever competitive banking sector.<br />

POLITICS<br />
<br />
Hon.Mohammad Umar Bago hence yielded to the clarion call to serve his people as a Federal Legislator. He pitched his tent with the then Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) at its formation stage, securing the Party’s ticket; he went ahead to overwhelmingly defeat his closest rival from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the seat of House of Representatives Member, representing the Chanchaga Federal Constituency in the 2011 General Elections.<br />

In his second stint in the House of Representatives, Hon. Muhammad Umar Bago having gathered political experience hit the ground running, and apart from contributions on the Floor of the House, he served with diligence in the following committees:-<br />

In 2016 he advised the management of the Maritime Commission that 83 staff should be sacked. He stated, “That is how touts are employed. Any employment that does not have approvals means there was never any employment in the first place. It does not make sense to have 700 staff in an academy with 300 cadets." He urged the Nimasa to spend money wisely in a well and prepared process.<br />
<br />
In 2019 after his victory for the third time for the seat of house of Representative chanchaga. He emerge as the top contestant of 9th Speakership of Federal Republic of Nigeria. Some of people are against him due to the zoning of the party.<br />
He stated, "I won't back down, I just want to correct the mistake of the party leaders by opinion of zonings."<br />
But unfortunately after the voting, he was defeated by Femi Gbajabiamila.<br />
<br />
This is the first time we saw Hon. Mohammad Umar Bago lost a, political position, but as it was said "every defeat is a blessing".<br />

Legislative Impact<br />
<br />
Hon.Muhammad Umar Bago had participated actively in all Legislative activities for the four years as a Federal Legislator. He is also a Representative with the wellbeing of his constituents firmly rooted in his heart, little wonder in immediate response to the needs of his constituents; he Moved the Motion on the outbreak of cholera in Chanchaga Federal Constituency, urging the State and Federal Government as well as the National Primary Healthcare Agency to ensure the disease was effectively contained.<br />

Over the years, Hon. Muhammad Umar Bago as a Member has attracted diverse Government projects to Chanchaga Federal Constituency. He has also personally intervened in diverse areas, his personal interventions include the following areas:-<br />

As the bedrock of development in any society, and as a Member who recognizes its necessity to the socioeconomic development of his people, it was necessary for Hon. Umaru Bago to give the required attention to education. In that regard, priority was given to scholarship to indigent students and provision of educational infrastructure to schools in Minna. Some of the infrastructures include:-<br />

In this critical area, a number of interventions were undertaken which include among others:-<br />

I. Construction of a Primary Health Care Clinic at Al-bishiri village in Minna South Ward.<br />
<br />
II. Resettlement and provision of free medical services to displaced lepers in Minna.<br />
<br />
III. Provision of support services to less privileged patents and their relations in General Hospital Minna, 2011- 2012.<br />
<br />
IIII. Provision of wheelchairs, free of charge, in support for the physically challenged persons across the constituency.<br />
<br />
Electricity<br />
<br />
Considering the importance of stable power supply as a development driver for the economic growth and well being of his people, Hon. Bago took the following bold steps to complement the government effort:-<br />

a. Distributed and installed 13 units of brand new 500 KVA transformers at 13 locations in Minna.<br />

b. Also, 10 broken down transformers for different communities in the constituency were repaired and put to use.<br />

Youth/ Women<br />
<br />
For the good of the women and youth in his constituency, below are some of the contributions of Hon. Umaru Bago channeled towards their wellbeing:-<br />

i. Facilitated the employment of 26 young boys and girls into the Federal Public Service notably, Military, Police, Civil Defense Corp and Nigeria Immigration service.<br />

ii. Assisted 150 women with deep freezers, sewing machines and other vocational appliances to help in job creation.<br />

iii. Provision and distribution of tri-cycles to 70 youth and 25 co-operative groups as a means of empowering them to generate stable income, wealth creation and poverty alleviation.<br />
<br />
iiii. Provision of motor cycle to students to ease their transportation problems as well as empowerment of over 100 entrepreneurs to set up small businesses.<br />

In a bid to ensuring peaceful co-existence among the people of different diverse groups and religious bodies on his constituency, the Honourable Member has remained resolute by sustaining the peaceful environment that the constituency was noted for. In this regard, Hon. Bago often interacts with these religious leaders with a view to preaching peace and harmony in the constituency. Similarly, about 16 vehicles were distributed to different religious bodies as support for logistics of their members. He also donated ambulances to Minna Central Mosque and Minna General Hospital.<br />
<br />
All these aforementioned interventions had in no small measure built tremendous confidence on the Honourable Member by his electorates that the popular chanting of “SAI BAGO” became a household name in Chanchaga Federal Constituency.<br />

Sadest day<br />
<br />
He lost his mother Hajiya Aisha Mohammed on 1 June 2019, in a brief illness. May Allah subhanawo watallah forgive her and grant her Aljanatul firdaus Ameen.<br />

The commission shifted the election by one week, explaining how difficult it was for it to shift the general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who briefed journalists at about 2:43am on Saturday, in Abuja, said the commission had met on Friday, 15th February 2019 and reviewed its preparations for the 2019 General Elections earlier scheduled for Saturday, and therefore, shifted the Presidential and National Assembly elections to Saturday, 23rd February 2019.<br />

According to him, “Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible, said Yakubu.

He said, “consequently, the Commission has decided to reschedule the Presidential and National Assembly Elections to Saturday, 23rd February 2019.<br />

Furthermore, the Governorship, State House of Assembly and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections is rescheduled to Saturday 9th March 2019. This will afford the Commission the opportunity to address identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections.

“This was a difficult decision for the Commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of the elections and the consolidation of our democracy.

“The Commission will meet key stakeholders to update them on this development at 2pm on Saturday, 16th February 2019 at the Abuja international Conference Centre”, he added.<br />

Corruption:-may be defined as a process of dishonestly or fraudulent conduct by those in power(Government), typically involving bribery and embezzlement of the public funds.<br />

Frankly speaking corruption goes beyond bribery an Embezzlement of public funds by government officials  alone. It encapsulate all illicit contractual agreement between ordinary man which has been tagged as Give and Take or give what you have for what you want.<br />

Corruption is a widely spread virus amidst the Nigerians. Corruption has eaten so deep to the extent that when you find someone who is not corrupt it becomes surprising.<br />

corruption is boosted by poverty when the basic needs of a common man is not available to him at that point in time.<br />

when the desire for accumulation of wealth becomes widespread then corruption is compulsory. Political positions are often wealthy and powerful due to the huge amount of funds allocated to political office holders.
therefore a greedy individual get the notion and perceive the attainment of political post.<br />

*3:poor Education and illiteracy:
  when the number of educated persons in a society is high they will be gainfully employed and will have a good understanding of consequence of corruption.

INTRODUCTION<br />
WHO ARE THE NUPES?
Research shows that Nupencizhi or Nupes originated from Nubia to the current areas of their settlement.
Researchers discovered that most languages have their aboriginal roots for communication before generation upon generation corrupted some languages to be what we see today.
The ancestor of Nupencizhi or Nupes was Ugba bin Annafi who was originally from Nubia. He migrated to different areas before he finally came to Nigeria to settle. His ancestral language was Nubia, then Nufa and now it has been totally corrupted into Nupe.
Nupe is one of the languages of KWA GROUP of Africa which included many other languages like Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Ejaw, Hubris, Shuwa, Kanuri, and others.
Researchers also stressed that Nupe people came from Massar or Egypt. The proof of this is the ancient glass industry of Nupe Land. The industry is still active in it, is the existence of many artifacts at Masaga in Bida, Niger State of Nigeria.
Nupe people before 15th century settled at riverine areas of Niger - areas or Nigeria in West Africa. They were people with unique culture, headed by a traditional leader called Ezhitso or Zhitsu as we call them today.
When Nupencizhi got to Nigeria, they first of all settled at Nku, then Nupeko, then, Essan, then Ewu, then Tafyan, then Yessa, then Kpanjuru, then Gbara, then Gaba, then Yida, then Towagi, then Bida and later spread all over the country. The above mentioned communities were politically independent of one another. However, they were strongly linked together economically.
Nupes had over 500 villages and towns as a result of disputes back then. What mostly led to the establishment of a new village was as a result of either the elder brother in the family wanting to be the head first, to rule the community or the younger brother desirous of being the head first to rule the community. They were impatient to one another. Some instances were as a result of traveling, farming, witch craft and waging of war against each other. You can notice villages in kin Nupe today that have similar names. Some have only slight differences like:-<br />
1. Wasagi of Agaie LG, Wasagi of Katcha LG, Wasagi of Gbako LG,<br />
2. Tafyan of Agaie LG, Tafyan of Gbako LG. Another examples are<br />
3. Sallawu woro, Sallawu Gbako, Kuci woro, Kuci Gbako etc<br />
These show that the above named villages have the same roots but later got separated due to disagreement within themselves.<br />

CLASSES OF NUPES<br />
Nupes are classified in to three categories:-<br />
1. Nupe Bini,<br />
2. Nupe Kin takozhi,<br />
3. Nupe Gede.<br />
1. Nupe BINI comprises of Bida and its axis, Agaie and its axis, Katcha and its axis, Lavun and its axis, Gbako and its axis, Edati and its axis, and Lapai town.<br />
2. Nupe Kin Takozhi comprises of, Basange, Dibo, Kupa, Kakanda, Abawa, Sokun, Egba etc.<br />
3. Nupe Gede, Comprises of Mokwa and its axis, Zugurma, Raba, Patigi, Lafiyagi, Tsonga, and Tsaragi.<br />
Nupe Bini which is the central Nupe Language for communication is almost the same with Gede. The differences are not that deep, unlike those of the sub-groups of Nupes, that's Nupe Kin Takozhi that understand Bini and Gede and can speak the dialect accurately.<br />

Nupes celebrate wedding for as long as one week before the main day. You can notice the signs from the far and close-by villages through burning, drumming and a long flag, etc.<br />

Nupe people occupy several towns and villages across the states of Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. A good number of Nupe speaking people can also be found in other towns across the country with a considerable number of them being in Kaduna, Kano, Benin, Onitsha and Lagos.<br />
Anthropologists have observed that the Nupe ethnic group is the second largest minority tribe in Nigeria.<br />
This gift no doubt is from God Almighty and must be appreciated by all Nupe sons and daughters. <br />
The gift of Number is a potential that must be harnessed to its fullest for the benefit of the Nupes and the nation at large. Indeed, the population of the Nupes and it's Sub-tribes is sufficient to propel the political advancement, economic development, and social upliftment of the entire populace. <br />
The only impetus towards achieving the underlining goals is however, the unity of purpose amongst the Nupe people.<br />
Though, Nupe people are known to have attained several heights in different fields of endeavors in Nigeria and are believed to be ethnocentric wherever they find themselves, the unity of purpose for the common good is still lacking.<br />
If truth must be told, the traditional institutions of Nupe people are working tirelessly to ensure that Nupe Cultural activities progress day in day out. On this regard, we must say kudos to Etsu Nupe Alhaji Dr. Yahaya Abubakar for introducing Nupe Cultural Day 11 years ago. The Etsu Nupe did that to bring all Nupencizhi together irrespective of their religion and location. And if you look at this initiative, its not only existing across Nigeria, it's also included a fiesta of wedding ceremony, naming ceremony, schools cultural days like the one we are celebrating today and others.
Finally, I will like to call on parents to encourage their children to go to school. They should speak their mother tongue at homes and other places. When children speaks their immediate language, learning is always easier.<br />
I also wish to thank the management of New Horizons Nursery and Primary School, the indefatigable Headmistress; Hajiya Fatima Popo Ola, members of staff, students and parents for this wonderful opportunity to stand before you all and deliver this brief talk on History and Culture of the Nupe People.<br />
